Scans and camera TIFFs are enormous. Converting to PNG keeps every pixel; converting to JPEG or WebP keeps the look at a fraction of the size.

Geometry only — texture coordinates,
materials and vertex colours are not carried through. Decimating a
UV-mapped mesh correctly is a much harder problem, and mangling your
