An animated GIF is almost always the wrong format โ converting it to video shrinks it by an order of magnitude.

0 merges only exactly equal vertices. A small value also closes hairline cracks left by CAD exporters.
Geometry only โ texture coordinates,
materials and vertex colours are not carried through. Decimating a
UV-mapped mesh correctly is a much harder problem, and mangling your
UVs quietly would be worse than leaving them alone.

What actually shrinks GIF files
A still GIF re-encodes as PNG or WebP and gets much smaller with no visible change.
For animation, drop the file on the video page instead: the same frames as H.264 or VP9 are routinely ten to fifty times smaller than the GIF.
GIF is capped at 256 colours per frame, so anything photographic already looks worse than the alternatives.
