Geometry only — texture coordinates,
materials and vertex colours are not carried through. Decimating a
UV-mapped mesh correctly is a much harder problem, and mangling your
UVs quietly would be worse than leaving them alone.

What actually shrinks PLY files
ASCII PLY converts to binary PLY losslessly and shrinks substantially.
Scan data is the ideal decimation candidate: the triangle count usually far exceeds the real detail present.
Only positions and faces are read; colours and confidence values are skipped.
