OBJ is plain text, which makes it readable and enormous. Converting to a binary mesh format is a large, lossless win.

0 merges only exactly equal vertices. A small value also closes hairline cracks left by CAD exporters.
Geometry only โ texture coordinates,
materials and vertex colours are not carried through. Decimating a
UV-mapped mesh correctly is a much harder problem, and mangling your
UVs quietly would be worse than leaving them alone.

What actually shrinks OBJ files
Writing the same geometry as binary PLY typically cuts the file by 70โ80% with no change to the model.
Faces with more than three vertices are triangulated on read.
Materials, texture coordinates and normals are not carried through โ this tool works on geometry.
